That’s the headline from The Idaho Statesman’s front page yesterday. The article went on to say that the Moody’s website, Economy.com, considers Idaho to be one of five states that could lead the country out of the recession. The reasons: 1) population growth, 2) a reviving high tech industry plus a labor force trained in high-tech, and 3) a business-friendly climate in Idaho.
msnbc.com also reported on the Moody’s report saying that Idaho, along with Washington, Oregon, Colorado and Texas, will lead the way in job growth.
Looking at what has happened over the past 4-5 years, the prediction makes sense. Idaho was booming with population growth beginning in 2005 and was the 6th fasting growing state in 2008. Most Realtors would confirm that a number of their buyer clients were people moving here from out of state. Retirees, professionals, job transfers, you name it. And with the number of out of state buyers that have been contacting me lately about a possible relocation to Boise, it appears that the boom may re-start.
The high tech industry is alive and well in Boise. Regardless of the lay-offs at Micron Technology and the possibility of lay-offs at Hewlett-Packard, we’ve seen – in the past – what happens when high tech workers are laid off in the Boise area – they go out and start up new businesses in the area.
